Help Wanted: Summer Sunday School
As the summer approaches and the school year ends, we close down Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This is to give the catechists a well deserved rest from all their work for us during the school year. It h as been our practices to organize a "Summer Sunday School" so that parents can attend Church while their children are being cared for. Summer Sunday School is much less about instruction and more about childcare. In years past we've used a standard curriculum with lesson plans. For the last two years we've simply read stories from the Doubleday Children's Bible, followed by an art activity. Marielle Askew has been the catechist for the last several years.
This year Marielle is teaching summer school, and she is still recovering from the accident she was in last year. Consequently she is not available to be the summer catechist. I don't have another person to take her place. What we did prior to hiring Marielle was to ask for volunteers to take a Sunday or two in the summer so that the task was spread out among a group and no one had the whole thing. We'll have to do that again this year in order that Summer Sunday school can happen.
It is really very easy. We'll put together the stories to be read and Tracy is ordering the art and craft materials. We need volunteers for Sundays June 25 through September 12. That comes to 12 Sundays.
Beginning of Summer Church Potluck Lunch
Sunday June 26
One Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. Potluck Follows
Several times a year we combine the 7:45 and 10:15 liturgies into one service. This gives the opportunity for people who attend these different services to worship together and to enjoy each other’s company. The 10:15 people teach the 7:45 people how to sing. The 7:45 people teach the 10:15 people how to pass the peace!
We usually do this at the beginning of the summer, on the Sunday following the Santa Maria Barbecue in September, and for the Annual Parish Meeting in January.
Chris Ortiz will coordinate the Potluck Lunch. The sign up sheet will be at Church the next two Sundays. Plan to come, renew acquaintances, enjoy conversation, and each other’s cooking.

Emmaus Road: Summer Movies Spotlight
Monday June 20, 7:00 p.m.
Emmaus Road has begun it’s summer movies. Last Monday we finished Going Clear the HBO documentary about Scientology. This week we look at film that shows people not wanting to know what they know that they know. The film is Spotlight which is the story of how the Boston Globe came to break the story of the child molestation in the Roman Catholic Church. Once again we consider the question of self deception, the why and the how. Everyone is welcome to participate.
Food For Thought
On the Food for Thought Table this Sunday, another article from Philosophy Now, “Atheism On Trial.” The article asks if Atheism can stand up to a critique not of faith but of reason, and finds that the answer is no.
