Schedule Change:  Postponing Combined Service and Potluck

 Due to some miscommunication regarding a scheduled event for Sunday afternoon June 26,   We will postpone the combined service and potluck until the Fall.

Sunday Schedule June 26 will be the normal one:  7:45 & 10:15 Holy  Eucharist.

Coffee Hour Sign Up

The Sign up Sheet for Coffee hour for July & August will be outside the Church on Sunday.  At this point all the Sundays are open for volunteers.  You can sign up at Church or email in to the Office.

Emmaus Road:   Summer Movies  Spotlight

Monday June 27, 7:00 p.m.    We Skipped Last Week because of the extreme heat!

Emmaus Road has begun it’s summer movies.   We finished Going Clear the HBO documentary about Scientology.  This week we look at film that shows people not wanting to know what they know that they know.   The film is Spotlight which is the story of how the Boston Globe came to break the story of the child molestation in the Roman Catholic Church.   Once again we consider the question of self deception, the why and the how.  Everyone is welcome to participate.

Summer Sunday School

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to take a Sunday for the Summer Sunday School. 

Two Sundays remain to be filled:   August 14, 21   You can sign up by emailing the office or the Sign Up Sheet outside Church on Sunday.

 The Purpose

The Summer Sunday School has two purposes.  One is to give our catechists a break from all their efforts on our behalf during the year.  The second is to provide an activity for children who come to Church in the summer time so their parents can have some time for quiet and reflection during the Sunday liturgy.

 So the Summer Sunday School is mostly childcare that consists of reading a story and doing some activity. 

 The Material

We will be using The Doubleday Children’s Bible as the source for the story.  We will use the stories in the New Testament.  Following our procedure in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, we don’t present very much Old Testament material until the children reach Level 3 which is 9-12. 

 You’ll find that answering questions from a Gospel story to be a lot easier than one from the Old Testament!

 We have several copies of The Doubleday Children’s Bible, so you can pick one up at Church the week before your lesson and then leave it behind, when your done, or pass it on to the next catechist. 

 Since there won’t be regular attendance, feel free to pick whatever Gospel or New Testament story you want.  You might check with the catechist before you to see what they did so you don’t double up. 

 The Activity will be various art and coloring along with small project kits from Oriental Trading Company.  The art materials are in the Parish Hall.

Preparation before hand:

The teacher will want to be there a little early to go over what craft looks appealing and to read through the lesson.  Keep the crafts on the table by the door as a "surprise" otherwise, they'll start!

When kids come in, we talk about their week and if there is anything we should pray about.  (if there is only one child early, you can make a copy of a color page, but take it away before you actually start.)

Getting Going:

We started about 10:20.  If you are lucky, everyone is there by 10:15.  The kids are used to coming in and getting to work, so a color sheet is handy.

The Session:

10:20 - talk about the week, and what we want to pray about.  (Everyone talks, some may want to talk over others)

 10:25 - a short prayer thanking God for all the wonderful things that are and have happened; Asking for God's help for anything.  Then everyone says AMEN (this means Let it be so!)

10:28 Start the Gospel Lesson Reading from the Children's Bible in the New Testament.  I read the first "story" and showed the pictures.  I talked about any words that might need explaining.

Finishing:

11:00  we were finished, I introduced the craft We did it together one step at a time.  You can use the things on the table and the art material on the level 3 shelves. We cleaned up, went and washed hands

11:05 we were lining up to cross the street.  This may get you there a little early, so you have a little lee-way.

Street Crossing Procedure

Very, Very, Very Important!!

Must be followed!

When crossing church Street, I have used the following method.

Everyone STOPS before they reach the street.  You can see better, if you are up a little higher and if a person is on the street, it is easier to walk out "just a little" to see better. This must not happen.

Once stopped, look up Church Street ( cars race down this street.)  If you see one, you wait.

Then you look down to Avenue 64 TO THE STOP SIGNS.  If a car is there, wait to see if it will be turning left up Church Street or right up Church ST.

If everything is clear, you look back up Church Street.

When all is clear, the adult asks if it is ok to cross, and then you cross.  An adult stands in the middle of the street until everyone is across and then goes over.

If you are using the cross, everyone stays behind the cross.

I don't like a stop sign, because I like my hands free in case I need to grab someone.  Also, I go through this verbally and ask the kids to say when it is safe or unsafe.
