Parents & Children Barbecue

 It's about two weeks before we do the first of our two summer barbecues for Parents and Children at the Rectory.

We have several new parents who have not been to this before.  We hope that you will join us.  

Park on the Church driveway behind the Church.  Come up the flagstone walkway.  You'll hear us, or our dog Slinky.

 We'll do our normal thing of Hamburgers and Hot Dogs.   One new person thought she might bring some special Adult Food.  That would be great.

We have a number of Sundays coming up that are open for people to give Altar Flowers.   If you would like to give Altar Flowers for a memorial or a thank offering  on any of these open Sundays, please email the Church Office.  It will be added to the calendar and acknowledged in the bulletin

The Sign up Sheet for Coffee hour for July & August will be outside the Church on Sunday.  At this point all the Sundays are open for volunteers.  You can sign up at Church or email in to the Office.

Emmaus Road:   Summer Movies  People Unclear on the Concept

Monday June 13, 7:00 p.m.

Emmaus Road has begun it’s summer movies.  We viewed ½ of the movie Going Clear, the HBO documentary about Scientology.   The reason for one half was that we were having difficulty streaming the video from the Church WIFI, so Charity Perry hooked up the Big Screen in the Living Room to her phone.  She was only half charged.   It did allow for an interesting discussion.  We’ve decided to finish the movie this Monday.  We want to see if he gets the girl!   Everyone is welcome to attend.

Summer Sunday School

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd will finish this coming Sunday June 12.  For Sundays during the summer, Marielle Askew will lead a Sunday School class for children in Church during those Sundays.  It will include Bible stories and activities.   Begins Sunday June 19

Music with the Angels:

Sunday June 19  4:00 p.m.  Celebrate Father's Day with Early music

In honor of Father's Day, Jouyssance will present a concert dedicated to fathers and father figures of all types and traditions. From Josquin's monumental Pater noster, to madrigals and chansons, all things fatherly (even early sports!) will be considered.

Beginning of Summer Church Potluck Lunch

One Liturgy at 9:30 a.m.  Potluck Follows

Several times a year we combine the 7:45 and 10:15 liturgies into one service.  This gives the opportunity for people who attend these different services to worship together and to enjoy each other’s company.  The 10:15 people teach the 7:45 people how to sing.  The 7:45 people teach the 10:15 people how to pass the peace!  

 We usually do this at the beginning of the summer, on the Sunday following the Santa Maria Barbecue in September, and for the Annual Parish Meeting in January.

 Chris Ortiz will coordinate the Potluck Lunch.  The sign up sheet will be at Church the next two Sundays.   Plan to come, renew acquaintances, enjoy conversation, and each other’s cooking. 

Food For Thought

On the Food for Thought Table this Sunday, two interesting articles about a subject you might find that we don’t think much about.  That subject is the human soul.

 1.  From The New York Times, Columnist David Brooks writes an article called, “A Better Culture War.”   He says the social and cultural things we need to be concerned with are so much the hot button issues, but the deeper matters which are matters of the soul.  He writes:  The larger culture itself needs to be revived in four distinct ways:  We need to be more communal in an age that is overly individualistic; we need to be more morally minded in an age that is overly utilitarian; we need to be more spiritually literate in an age that is overly materialistic, and we need to be more emotionally intelligent in an age that is overly cognitive.” 

2.  From Issue #10 of Philosophy Now, “Can Robots Be Ethical?”  Driverless cars, and the U.S. Defense Department developing Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems, (LAWS), what algorithms will we use so a car decides to avoid a head on collision by hitting one person instead of two, or two instead of four, or four instead of a bus.   When human beings make such split second decisions, are they a matter of pure logic, or is there more to us than this?

What you might find interesting is that you may be more influenced by the surrounding materialistic assumptions of our culture than you realize.
