August 9, 2017 10th Sunday after Pentecost

From Tracy Gaestel

Dear Parish Family,

My words cannot express my gratitude for all of your wonderful prayers, gifts and well wishes.  Wonderful cards and flowers came to me while in the hospital.  Great meals, more cards, a book, flowers and calls came while I was recuperating.

I would think “I will write a thank you note” and then I would go down for a nap.  Bob took me off for a time in Cambria where I walked daily and slowly regained my strength.  At first, even following the story line in a book was difficult for me.  I dropped my online classes for the summer.  Slowly I recuperated.  During that time, the Level 3 atrium kids came up weekly to water our plants.  Then John and Linda Santoro came up to share a day with us and to drive me back to Pasadena so that I could return to work on time.  On my second day back at work, a parishioner came to help me deal with hundreds of textbooks.

The well wishes continue, even upon our return.  I confess, I cannot attach a name to every gift that I received, and only God knows the people who prayed.  But I can tell you that knowing your prayers were with me, I rested in the knowledge that my surgery and recovery were covered, even when I was unable to pray.  I knew that I was surrounded by prayer.

I am back, on the road to complete recovery and much more aware of the gift of being a Christian in this Christian family.  Thank you.  May God bless you as you continue this journey that we travel together.

Parents and Children’s BBQ:  Sunday, September 10, 4:30 p.m.

We were sorry not to do our traditional beginning of summer barbecue for all of you last June due to Tracy's surgery.  We missed doing it, and Tracy told me you missed having it.  Tracy is recovering well and is back to work.  So we will do the Parent and Children BBQ on Sunday September 10  4:30 p.m. at the Rectory.   We'll do our standard fare and have all of you help by bringing things to fill out the meal.   I'll give more info as we get closer.

Coffee Hour for August

We need people for coffee hour for the 7:45 services on August 20 & 27

Summer Sunday School:

Summer Sunday School continues through the month of August.  Gillian Cox will lead a Sunday School class for children in Church during those Sundays.  It will include Bible stories and craft activities.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd will resume on Sunday September 10.

Religious Potential of the Child:  Thursday, August 10 7:00 p.m.

Fr. Bob’s reading group on The Religious Potential of the Child, by Sofia Cavalletti concludes the book this week.  We’ll read the last three chapters and discuss where we go next.

New Email Address.

If you can read this, you probably don’t need to.  If you can’t read this you do need to.  Church of the Angels has a new email address.

Please correct your email and check you spam settings so you can receive communication from the parish.

Emmaus Road:  Monday August 14, 7:00 p.m.

Emmaus Road continues its summer practice of viewing movies and using them as a springboard for discussion.    Please feel free to join in any or all and enjoy the films, the discussions, and the wine!

Our film this week will be, People Like Us, which is a documentary about social class in American society.   It is a relevant topic for the current time.

On the Road Again

Not wanting to keep the parish in the dark, Fr. Bob will be gone Sunday August 20 to see the eclipse.  He has a seminary classmate who retired to Salem Oregon, which is right in the path of totality.  So, he has a place to stay right in the center of things.  He and Tracy will leave for Oregon on Friday August 18th and return home on Tuesday August 22.

Once again Pastor John Santoro will take the services for that Sunday.

After the 10:15 Liturgy: August 20

We need parishioners to assist with cleaning up after Coffee Hour

and securing the Church.   Please give us a hand.

It's important that everything be turned off, all candles extinguished, and the Parish Hall be locked as well.

On the cabinet behind the choir will be a loose leaf binder with instructions and pictures about set up and take down.

Music with the Angels:  Sunday August 20, 4:00 p.m.

Black Rose Early Music Ensemble Presents:

Sweet Toots and a String Thing or Two

Delightful musical bon-bons by Fasch, Hotteterre, Finger, Biber, Mainero, and others.

Free will offering, $10.00 suggested donation.

Annual Parish Retreat  Friday, Saturday, Sunday morning, October 13, 14, & 15.  Camp 1000 Pines in Crestline.

Mark the date on your calendar.  We've got a good set of speakers,  Rick Fraser and Charity Perry, both who attend the Emmaus Road Group.  Rick is a Ph.d psychologist and Charity is a Ph.d sociologist at Cal State LA.  Both have extensive experience in family matters.  We haven't settled on a topic yet, but it will be good I assure you.

So put it on your calendar now.  Don't worry, there is no eclipse that weekend, so there should be no scheduling conflict.
