Looking Ahead: Choral Evensong: Sunday May 28
The Choir will do a special Choral Evensong on Sunday May 28. What a treat!
Evensong is one of the unique contributions that Anglicans have made to Christian worship and our setting makes it especially wonderful. Following the service we’ll do a wine and cheese gathering on the patio outside. Put this on your calendar.
Episcopal Consecration: Sign Ups
A Sign Up Sheet will be outside Church beginning this coming Sunday for those interested in attending the Consecration of Fr. John Taylor as the 7th Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angels.
This Sunday is the Last Chance to Sign Up!
The Sign Ups need to be turned in by Monday May 15! So far 10 people have signed up. We have 10 more slots. If you are interested, please sign up the next two Sundays, or email the Church Office.
What’s Happening with Tracy
Thank you to everyone who has asked about how Tracy is doing. This is what is coming next. Tracy is doing okay right now. She is scheduled for Open Heart Surgery on Monday May 22. That will be to put in a new valve. Her aorta is good. She doesn't have any coronary artery disease. There is some slight thickening of the heart muscle, but it's negligible. They will also remove some kind of sac around the aorta as a way to prevent a possible stroke. They will also do an ablation while they have her opened up to prevent future atrial flutters. She'll be in ICU for one day and in the hospital for 4 (Assuming everything goes okay.) Her recovery is 6-8 weeks. She won't be able to drive for one month because the breastbone needs to not have any upper body stress while it heals from having to have been broken to get to the heart. She's working and everything is normal for now.
Food For Thought:
On the Food For Thought Table this Sunday an article from my son’s alumni magazine, from Cal Berkeley: Horns, Halos, and Heroism. This is about what contemporary psychology and neuroscience is learning about what goes into our making choices about right and wrong.
Das Boot: Working on the Boat that is Church of the Angels
Hi Father Bob,
Here's a followup to the last update from the last work day on the bell tower equipment. The next steps were to:
- Sand down the cast iron bell supports, hammer mechanism and wooden sleepers
- Paint all the metal components with a durable oil based paint.
- Seal the sleeper timbers with an oil based sealer. This will eventually dull down as it's exposed to the elements, but the main function is to keep water from absorbing into the wood and causing it to rot.
- Lastly, the moving parts were lubricated with a white lithium grease.
The next steps are to apply a lighter liquid oil to the bell clapper as the grease could not penetrate deeply enough into the center pin on which it rotates. It still has a slight squeak when the clapper is moved, but with the other pins greased, it should be easier to ring on Sundays.
Also, when the hammer is triggered to hit the bell, the huge weight of the iron has caused the somewhat inadequate blocking on which it sits, to become loose. I think the problem would be solved with a few metal angles and maybe some strapping from below. I'll go to the hardware store and see what options they have that might work.
