Church of the Angels Receives a Legacy Gift
Last Spring we held a lunch and a presentation on Legacy Giving. Legacy Giving is one of the Four Fields of Christian Giving:
Annual Giving: Ongoing, regular financial contributions that pay to operate the Church through the year.
Mission Giving: Special financial contributions to advance the Kingdom of God beyond the Parish.
Capital Giving: Special financial contributions for infrastructure, either to build new buildings or restore existing ones.
Legacy Giving: This is giving beyond one’s lifetime by leaving bequests to the parish so that the our mission and ministry may continue through time.
We had a speaker at our Legacy Giving lunch, Ellen Farewell who is an attorney specializing in Estates, Wills, and Trusts, who gave an overview how to Legacy gifts can be made.
This past week COA received a Legacy gift from the estate of a long time parishioner who died many years ago. Some of you may remember Doris Newell. She pre-deceased her husband Norm, by many years. Norm himself died a couple of years ago and so the attorney for the family has made distributions according to the will.
Church of the Angels received a gift of $49, 555.00 which represented 10% of the value of the estate.
The attorney sent a list of the distribution which can give an example of how any of us might wish to plan for where we would like our Legacy Gifts to go.

Having moved away
So this is how one family, long time members of Church of the Angels made Legacy Gifts. You can see that it reflects the values they saw as important and the desire that those values could be continued by giving support to those organizations that embody them.
The take away here is the value in planning ahead for how you’d like your remaining assets to be distributed in the way you want, to accomplish the goals you desire.
Throughout our history, Church of the Angels has been blessed by Legacy gifts that have and continue to strengthen our life. There is Mrs. Campbell Johnston who built the Church and left money for its upkeep. There is Mrs. Roddis who left money in the 1950’s for the ongoing life of the Church. It was a Legacy Gift that remodeled the Parish Hall Kitchen, and another gift that restored our organ.
We’ve also received other gifts of varying amounts through the years. So we are grateful to Doris for her contributions to us during her lifetime and for making a gift that would continue to support us.
When it is appropriate, please consider a plan to make a Legacy Gift to Church of the Angels, so that those who come after us can receive the same blessings we have enjoyed.
Some Sunday Needs for August 28
We could use some help.
Coffee hour. Coffee Hour hosts for both the 7:45 and 10:15 service.
It’s quite easy. Coffee hour is simply bringing some snack food and helping as people, especially children serve themselves. The coffee and ice tea is set up ahead of time. At the end, hosts help in the take down.
We welcome any volunteers.
Emmaus Road Monday: August 29
We continue our summer movies with The Last Days in the Desert", An imagined chapter from Jesus' forty days of fasting and praying in the desert. On his way out of the wilderness, Jesus struggles with the Devil over the fate of a family in crisis. The star, Ewan MacGregor plays both roles of Jesus and the Devil
