Church of the Angels Annual Giving for 2016
We’ve begun our Annual Giving Drive for 2016. We ask everyone to make a pledge of financial support for our parish life for the year to come. Annual Giving is one of the Four Fields of Christian Giving, the four different ways Christian people support the life and ministry of the Body of Christ, of which every baptized person is a vital and irreplaceable part.
Annual Giving: A commitment of regular financial support that sustains the parish year by year.
Mission Giving: Making financial gifts beyond the parish for building the Kingdom of God through works of mercy and assistance to those in need through Episcopal Relief and Development, the Salvation Army, Hillsides Home, or other Church or secular organizations.
Capital Giving: Giving to improve, support, or expand the Church’s infrastructure.
Legacy Giving: Making a provision for the Church in one’s estate planning so that one’s giving extends beyond their life time. This is so those who come after us may have resources to continue the Church’s life and work, just as we have had resources from legacy gifts of those who came before us. (Church of the Angels is itself a Legacy Gift)
Highlights from Bill Wood’s talk to us two Sundays ago
Bill Woods, who is on the Finance Committee spoke to both services two Sundays ago about Annual Giving. Here are the main points.
1. Inviting those who have not been regular supporters of the Parish to join us in supporting the life and work of Church of the Angels
2. Sharing his own experience of doing his best to increase his pledge each year by 10%, Bill invited regular givers to consider doing the same thing.
3. Finally, Bill said he noticed that our Treasurer Leigh Torgerson looks happy when there is money. Let’s all make Leigh happy!
Thanks Bill for your talk.

Getting Ready for El Nino
Fr. Bob replaced the Sump Pump under the Parish Hall. Mud had gotten into the sump, hardened and caused the pump shaft to break. He discovered this after the first rain. He installed new pump has been installed with a pipe connection that allows the pump to be taken out and service.
Fr. Bob serviced the sump pump in the Church Basement. This located in the closet in the downstairs bathroom which also contains the water heater and the organ pump.
Getting ready for the rain also includes clearing gutters on all the Church buildings. This includes the Church, Parish Hall, and Rectory.
The same person who put the new coating on the Blind Valley of the Parish Hall, also repaired damaged slates on the Church roof
It is also necessary to make sure the belfry is also clear so water can drain down the gutters and out instead of coming inside the clock room.

Food For Thought
On the Food for Thought Table this Sunday, two very different articles from two very different publications.
1. From the current New Republic, A Backward Glance. This is a review of Marilynne Robinsons new book: The Givenness of Things. As seen above, this will be the new book that the Emmaus Road Group will be reading. Robinson writes: “I miss civilization, and I want it back. I want to overhear passionate arguments about what we are and what we are doing and what we ought to do. I want to feel that art is an utterance made in good faith by one human being to another. I want to believe there are geniuses scheming to astonish the rest of us, just for the pleasure of it.”
2. From the current Handguns Magazine, Fight or Flight: How Avoidance Can Be Your Best Self-Defense Weapon. When Fr. Bob was in the Citizen’s FBI Academy, on the firearms training day, the instructor said, “If you shoot somebody, you’re looking at 10 years of litigation.” This article talks about how to not find yourself such situations in the first place. Last Sunday we heard Jesus say in the Gospel, “turn the other cheek.” This article will show how to do that in a smart way.
