Emmaus Road Monday June 2,
Emmaus Road continues the book, Jesus, by Fr. James Martin SJ. We’ve read two other books by Fr. Martin, The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything, and My Life with the Saints. Fr. Martin is an engaging writer and we look forward to a good time with his book. Emmaus Road will read Chapters 8 & 9 for Monday, June 2.
Election Day: Vote Early, Vote Often
Tuesday, June 3, All Day
Church of the Angels will host the polling place for the upcoming Primary Election. The Parish Hall will be the site of the voting. It’s part of our civic involvement along with hosting the San Rafael Neighborhood Association.

On Sunday June 1, there will be a sign up sheet outside Church to organize a carpool for those who would like to go to the ordination.
Barbecue for Parents and Children: Sunday June 8, 4:00 p.m.
Fr. Bob and Tracy will host their “beginning of summer barbecue” for parents and children. This is a chance for parents and children to have fun fellowship with one another or one of life’s most amazing journeys. There are not only the school aged children that we see coming into Church at the Offertory, but now a large number of new parents with new young children. We hope that all of you can attend.
125th Anniversary Activity: Renewal of Wedding Vows Saturday, June 21, 2:00 p.m.
On June 21 we will be celebrating one hundred and twenty five years of marriages at Church of the Angels by renewing the vows of every couple in attendance who was married here. The ceremony will begin at 2:00, reception to follow. Thank you so much for reaching out to us. What a wonderful surprise.
And thank you for your diligent work in finding us. In 1979, we found and fell in love with your church when we were looking for a beautiful place to be married and had the most beautiful wedding there. However, before and since, we’ve attended my wife’s mother’s church in Hollywood, and have only returned to Church of The Angels very occasionally. Throughout all these years we had never received any correspondence from you, so you can imagine how wonderful it was to receive your letter. Thank God we haven’t moved, since our address was the only way to locate us in ’79.
Over the years, she and I had considered returning to Church of The Angels to renew our vows, but that would have required a special ceremony and coordinating many friends and relatives, so we were waiting for a significant date . . . and it never quite came about.
She passed away just late last year. Her oncologist and I knew that she was not going to survive this, her fourth distinct cancer, but we agreed not to tell her, so that she would continue to have hope throughout her last months.
As I discovered the severity of her condition, I considered rushing to contact you about a vow-renewal ceremony then, but if done at that time, would certainly tip her off to her fate. If only your anniversary were a year earlier, it would have been just perfect.
Is there an option for me to attend the ceremony and renew our vows even though she cannot be there in person?
I know she’ll be there in spirit.
I hope you’ll find a way to make this work.

Yes we received your letter re: history of weddings at the Church of Angels.
My wife Fay and I were married there while I was on leave with the US Army on April 1, 1966 (Yes, April Fools day), We both remember and treasure the memories of the wonderful church. We asked for and received an evening candle light ceremony (something of a rarity now) so I sent you one of the pictures looking forward from the rear of the church during the ceremony. Both Fay and I grew up not too far from Ave 64. Fay in Alhambra and me in Eagle Rock, we were both excited to have our wedding in such a beautiful and historic church.
We are both unusually healthy and living in Northern California (Plumas County) under the foot of Mt Lassen @ Lake Almanor. We are not sure if we can come to the 125 anniversary celebration but we can sure submit these photos. We sincerely hope that the festivities are enjoyable..
Food For Thought
This Sunday we will again hear from the 1st Epistle of St. Peter, which we’ve been reading during this Easter Season. We will hear, “Don’t be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come upon you as though something strange was happening.” It continues a theme present throughout the whole letter, that is, that suffering is part and parcel of an authentic Christian life. Who knew?
On the Food For Thought Table this Sunday is an article from Philosophy Now, that looks at this issue from a philosophical perspective. The article is called, On Happiness and reflects on the ramifications for a society (ours) whose highest ethical value is personal contentment.
