Fr. Bob’s Vacation

Fr. Bob and Tracy will be on vacation starting Monday July 3.  Fr. Bob will return on August 2.  Tracy will be coming home a bit earlier to start work as Librarian at Washington Middle School.

During Fr. Bob’s vacation the Parish Sunday Schedule will continue as normal.  Please make it a point to come to Church if you’re in town.  We don’t want it to look like Fr. Bob is running a cult!

Guest Celebrant and Preacher during July

We welcome as our Guest Celebrant and Preacher, the Rev. John Santoro.  Pastor Santoro and Fr. Bob have been friends for decades.  Three years ago he retired from his parish in Valpariso Indiana, and several months ago returned to Southern California.

The Episcopal and Lutheran Churches have a reciprocal recognition of each other’s ordained clergy, and so can either can celebrate and preach in either denomination.  In some parts of the country, especially in low populated areas, a Lutheran pastor may be serve as Rector for an Episcopal congregation or a combined Episcopal/Lutheran congregation and vice versa.  So we are very glad to have Pastor Santoro take the services while Fr. Bob is on his vacation.   Please welcome John and his wife Linda .  Below is some information about him.

Pastor John Joseph Santoro

Although Pastor Santoro describes himself as being a Lutheran from his time in the womb, he also feels comfortable with being a not-so-closeted Anglican. After graduating from Capital University with a major in political science, a venerable Lutheran school in Columbus, Ohio, he spent five years in the U. S. Air Force as a personnel officer during the Viet Nam War. Not quite ready to capitulate to God’s call in his life, he then ran away to graduate school, earning an M.B.A. from California State University, Sacramento. By the end of graduate school, Pastor hesitatingly concluded that the only way to discern if God was calling him to parish ministry was to go to seminary. In 1977, after earning a M.Div. degree from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, he was ordained and called to his first parish in “Beautiful Downtown Burbank,” California. It was shortly after arriving in Burbank that he met Father Gaestel. After nearly 40 years, their friendship continues to this day. Pastor has also served parishes in Buena Park and Lancaster, California, and Valparaiso, Indiana. In 1990, he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree at the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia, thus earning his indisputable credentials as a closet Anglican.

Most of you are already familiar with Pastor John.  He assisted and celebrated at the Liturgies in Holy Week.  He really enjoys being with us, and from your feedback the parish enjoys him as well.

We decided on the 1978 film Days of Heaven to watch next week. The film is set in 1916 and features a young couple, Bill (Richard Gere) and Abby (Brooke Adams) who work as farm laborers in the Texas Panhandle. Although lovers, the couple pose as brother and sister (sound Biblically familiar?) . The wealthy farmer, played by Sam Shepard who employs them is attracted to Abby but the farmer has a fatal illness and the couple (Bill and Abby) plot to have Abby marry the farmer hoping to gain control of the farmer's property after he dies. Complications arise and the plot unravels with tragic results.  The film won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

What’s happening at Hillsides

After a hiatus caused by problems with its soils report Hillsides construction has resumed.  The report erroneously said that bedrock was 5 feet under the surface when in fact it was 35 feet.  They had to redesign the plans to shore up the huge excavation needed for both the underground parking and foundation for the new dining facility.  This, along with the City of Pasadena changing its mind about allowing Hillsides to take the dirt from the excavation and fill in a ravine up the canyon, and more rain than they anticipated, has set the construction back by a long time.  Things will now move forward as they seek to make up for lost time and money.

After the movie shoot Hillsides is scheduled to begin the excavation for the new building and hauling the dirt away.  This will tie up the driveway by the Church Street entrance during weekdays, but the driveway will be accessible on the weekends.  The schedule for the excavating and hauling is July 13 through August 4th

Movie Shoot during July: Capital Giving

Our Film Liason, Ken Ryan has been working feverishly to hammer out a contract for a good sized film shoot in July.  It is complicated by the construction at Hillsides.   Hillsides will shut down construction during the two shoot days as is stipulated in Lease Agreement the Land Use Committee and Hillsides negotiated in the Spring and was approved by the Bishop.  The contract states that Hillsides construction cannot interfere with Church activities and they must make every reasonable effort to accommodate us including noise abatement for both the Church and the Parish Hall.  This film shoot will be all exterior

Normally Hillsides construction does not interfere with our activities, but Hillsides only has access to its construction site by crossing through Church of the Angels property and since income from location fees is a vital part of our budget, Hillsides will have to suspend construction activity for that period.

The film schedule is as follows

July 10:  Preparation Day

July 11 & 12 Filming Days

July 13:  Take down and cleanup day.
