John H. Taylor elected bishop coadjutor of Los Angeles
Rancho Santa Margarita vicar elected on 8th ballot
The Rev. John Taylor was elected bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Los Angeles on the 8th ballot Dec. 3 by delegates gathered for the 121st annual meeting of the diocese at the Ontario Convention Center.
Taylor, 62, has served as vicar of St. John Chrysostom Church and School in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, since 2004. He was elected by 122 votes in the clergy order and 194 votes in the lay order.
The election culminated a nearly two-year search process. Los Angeles Bishop J. Jon Bruno announced during his address to convention that he will retire at the beginning of Diocesan Convention 2017.
"To our divided nation, to those living in fear and uncertainty, to anyone yearning for a rich relationship with the God in Christ who loves everyone without reservation, The Episcopal Church throws its arms open," Taylor said after the election was announced. "In our diverse, far-flung diocese, we are united in our baptismal pledge to strive for justice and peace among all people and to respect the dignity of every human being, especially those who are most vulnerable. I look forward with joy to serving alongside my fellow ministers -- laypeople, deacons, priests and bishops -- as we continue to proclaim the gospel in word and deed."
A lifelong Episcopalian, Taylor was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1954, the son of journalists and formerly served as chief of staff to former President Richard M. Nixon and later as the executive director of the Nixon Library.
He received a bachelor's degree in political science at the University of California, San Diego, and a master of divinity at the Claremont School of Theology and Bloy House. He is a graduate of Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts.
He was ordained a priest in January 2004 and also served as curate at the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle in Fullerton.
The Diocese of Los Angeles "groans with the potential for growth through mission and ministry to those in our communities who do not know our church but whom our God in Christ commands us to reach, embrace, empower and serve," Taylor has said.
His is a "via media" leadership style -- listening to his own instincts in consultation with others. "I listen to all stakeholders to learn from them," he has said. "If they've been heard, they'll be more likely to affirm my decision even if they don't agree with it."
Taylor has written two novels, Patterns of Abuse and Jackson Place, numerous newspaper and magazine articles and a blog, The Episcoponixonian.
Taylor married Kathleen Hannigan O'Connor in 2002 (pictured together above); he has two daughters, Valerie and Lindsay, and two stepchildren, Daniel and Meaghan.
The Diocese of Los Angeles encompasses some 70,000 Episcopalians in 136 neighborhood congregations and mission centers, some 40 schools and 15 other specialized service institutions located in six California counties. Los Angeles historically is one of the five most populous and culturally diverse of the Episcopal Church's 109 dioceses.
Pending the canonically required consent of a majority of the Episcopal Church's diocesan standing committees and bishops with jurisdiction, Taylor will be ordained and consecrated as bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Los Angeles on July 8, 2017 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center in Los Angeles.
Should We Have a Service on Christmas Day
Responses so far: 5 people have said they would attend
Your humble rector would like to know the mind of the parish on whether or not to have a service on Christmas Day, Sunday December 25 at 10:15 a.m.
Our practice has been to have two Christmas Liturgies, one for families and children at 4:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and our Midnight Mass which begins at 10:00 p.m. Ordinarily Christmas Day falls on a weekday and having had everyone, LEMs, Readers, Ushers, Choir, and Organist having put out so much work for Christmas Eve, that we have not done a Christmas Day service.
This year Christmas Day falls on a Sunday. In the past when this has happened we one time had a service and the another time did not.
I would like to know if there are people in the parish who Definitely would attend a Christmas Day service this year.
So IF YOU WILL ATTEND A CHRISTMAS DAY SERVICE: 10:15 A.M. THEN PLEASE REPLY TO THE EMAIL AND SAY "YES I/WE WILL BE THERE.
If you do not want to attend A Christmas Day service, don't reply at all. I just want to hear from those who say YES.

Completing Pledges for 2016
If necessary, please complete you Annual Giving Pledge for 2016 in the next several weeks. We will be sending out statements to show your giving up to this time. In January after we close the books for 2016, we will give you a year end statement of your giving to Church of the Angels. Everyone’s gift is necessary, and we appreciate your support
Church of the Angels Annual Giving for 2017
Here is a “gentle reminder” that we really need everyone to make an Annual Giving Pledge for 2017. A parish of our size must have the support of all its members in order to do all the things that make the parish so wonderful.
So, if you haven’t yet made a pledge for 2017, you can pick up a pledge card at the back of the Church, or online as This year we have added something to make the process of Pledging even more gentle. In addition to our regular mailing with a pledge card and return envelope, we have made it possible to submit your pledge on line. We have a link to our website which you can go to, fill out, and submit your pledge.
To access on line pledging go to : : http://www.coa-pasadena.org/pledge
When you press the “Submit” button your pledge card will automatically go to an email address specifically for the Parish Treasurer.
We do the Annual Giving Drive in a very low-key way and through the years, parishioners have generously supported the parish with their tithes and offerings. Year by year when Bill talks to us, he simply states the facts, and invites all to join in and take part.
If you have already submitted your Annual Giving Pledge for 2017, we thank you. If you haven’t yet, please make use of the on line pledge link. The mail in cards are fine too. If you’ve never make an Annual Giving Pledge before, we urge you to consider doing so. In a parish our size, everyone’s contribution is vital.

Outreach Committee
Community Service Update: The parish's Outreach Committee is busy thinking up a new approach to COA involvement with the external community. In the coming weeks, we'll ask you to complete a survey about your past and current community involvement and ideas about local needs, causes, or charitable activities you'd like to see Church of the Angels lead or be involved in. Once the committee has a sense of parish interests via the survey, they will formulate a plan for our external community service in 2017. Stay tuned for the upcoming survey, and thank you in advance for your participation and ideas.

Christmas Books for Suubi School in Uganda
It’s Advent, and the Outreach Committee is preparing a Christmas tree of ornaments and book suggestions to help you and your family gift the students at Suubi School in Uganda. This year the greatest need is for early readers and they need hardback books. (There are lots of students reading the early reader books!!)
Hardback books aren’t always available without ordering, so choose and order books from your favorite bookstore early. We suggest going as a family to a local, independent bookstore such as “Once Upon a Time” in Montrose, “Vroman’s” in Pasadena or “San Marino Toy and Book Shoppe” in San Marino to choose your favorite early readers, or pick a couple off the tree knowing you may need to order them.
We have included some African fable books that may no longer be published, so if you buy a used book (and this is perfectly fine!!!) please buy one in Very Good condition.
The first floor of the new elementary school has been completed and a gift to their Christmas party also helps to furnish the new classrooms. If you would like to make a student and student's family very happy, please donate here: https://mystory.lifesongfororphans.org/stories/christmas-blessings-hope-2016/
The children at Suubi are incredibly grateful for your love and prayers, books and donations. You can be assured that you are making a difference in the life of a child!
For more information talk to Tracy Gaestel, Kate Kahler-Rickman or Amy Riker after church.
Thank you for your generosity. You have blessed Suubi with Read-Alouds, Board Books and books for the classroom and you are helping to move them into a culture of reading.

Krampus Play with Film and Performance, 6:00 p.m. December 11
The event will be staged amid the candles and stained glass of the historic CHURCH OF THE ANGELS, an exquisite Gothic Revival edifice built in 1889. Here youll encounter the Krampus in his purest form the wily devil of the centuries-old Alpine Nikolausspiel or NICHOLAS PLAY, a folk theater genre dating back to the 18th century and resembling Englands Christmas mummers plays. The Nicholas Play is a primary origin of the Krampus tradition, and for tonights presentation, weve translated scenes from surviving German scripts to give you a taste of how the Krampus was experienced in Alpine villages of centuries gone by.
Our Los Angeles production combines only the most attractive and amusing scenes involving the Krampus, Lucifer, butchered children, and the inexorable power of Death, all represented in bouncy rhyme. Whether speaking of eternal salvation or the merciless tortures of Hell, the dialogue of the Nikolausspiel is inevitably delivered in cheery couplets worthy of Dr. Seuss.
Preceding the play,we're presenting a preview featurette of Krampus documentary,TUIFL ("Devil"). Filmmaker HANNAH JAKUBOWSkA will be in town to introduce the film.
Traditional songs and stories of the season will be performed by MICHAEL & MONIKA KAUFMANN, siblings traveling here from Gai bei Trofaiach in the Styrian state of Austria to share their holiday customs. Styrian musician JOHANNES TEICHERT will accompany them on flugelhorn.
Also helping to transport you to 19th-century Europe will be Bay Area artist KIMRIC SMYTHES KRAMPUS-DRIVEN STEAMCAR, which will be parked outside before and after shows for photos with the Krampuses and cast members. Bay Area accordionist JD LIMELIGHT will also be on hand to keep it Alpine.
Guests are invited to come in themed wardrobe, period clothing, or holiday attire, festive or grim.
