Christmas Books for Suubi School in Uganda

Wow!  This parish is awesome.  Thank you so much for all of the gifts to Suubi Childrens’ Centre in Uganda.  This is the third year that we have gathered books.  The first year, Tracy left almost immediately to deliver the books when she did a week long staff development for the teachers at the Centre and got the books into the classrooms.

Since then, Suubi has built the bottom floor of an elementary school and is fundraising for the second floor.  When the second floor is completed, they want to turn one of the rooms on the first floor into a library and our parish is working on furnishing that library.

Two librarians from COA, Eileen Wakiji and Emily Woolery along with Tracy are working on a cataloging and processing system for the school library.  This, in a village that was using book pages as toilet paper only a few years ago!!  They plan to work here to catalog and process the books.  Then the books will be shipped to Uganda and Tracy and a team of people from COA will shelve the books and ready the library for use.

Eventually, the plan is to have this library become a library for the community.  This will be one of only a few school libraries in Uganda and most of those are in the capital city of Kampala.

So, YES, please feel free to send any books that haven’t arrived.  This is a long-term project.  If you feel drawn to provide books for children who have limited access to reading, we definitely need Hardcover or Library Binding, new or gently used books for reading levels from birth to 5th grade (no witches and very little about life in the USA).  Tracy has developed a wish-list of books on Amazon, many of these books are out of print and we will need books in, hopefully, ”Very Good” condition.  Former library books are often very good.  Right now the link is: http://a.co/ailfhEb.  It will be getting easier to remember soon!  Thank you!

Secret Handshake Class

Initial Meeting:  Saturday January 7, 10:00 a.m.   Parish Hall

As though you had nothing else to think about at this time of year!    Anyway, I got a call from Bishop Diane Bruce who will make a parish visitation to us on Sunday March 5, 2017.   This is an opportunity for people to be confirmed, received, or to renewal their baptismal vows.    It's a way of "joining" the Episcopal Church.

In preparation for this I offer a "new member class," which we call, Secret Handshake.   It gives you a chance to learn about the Episcopal Church and some of the more interesting things we do as a Christian community.

Below is a description of what we'll cover.  We start out dealing with your questions, and then proceed to some of the facts and lore.

 Secret Handshake Class

We invite you to participate in our Secret Handshake Class.  This is our fancy name for "New Members," or "Confirmation," or whatever.  It's a chance to learn about the ins and outs of the Episcopal Church and the distinctive way we practice the Christian faith.

As one wag was once quoted as saying,  "Well, yes, I'm sure that there are other ways to be a Christian, but no Gentleman would do anything else."  Or as another wag has said,  "I agree that everyone should be allowed to worship God in their own way.  So, you worship God your way, and I'll worship God His way."  Of course what people say about us often goes like this.  "What Church do you belong to?"  "I'm Episcopalian."  "Oh, is that a Christian Church?"

Well, Episcopalians are nothing if not weird, but you have to admit, most of us enjoy being a Christian this way, and we have no trouble poking fun at our culture and practices.

It is in that spirit of enjoyment and fun that we will look at our life and answer questions and generally make sense of it all.

 Here's the schedule:

 Session 1

Introduction, telling our stories, answering our questions

 Session 2

“Let us proclaim the Mystery of Faith"  An exercise in thinking like a theologian

 Session 3

Sacred Scripture

Session 4 A tour of the Church  (What the architecture means)

Session 5  Holy Baptism  (What does it mean to be a Christian)

Session 6  The Story of Anglicanism  Parts 1 & 2 (The history of our tradition, filmed at COA!)

Session 7  The Story of Anglicanism  Part 3  (The history of our tradition, filmed at COA!)

Session 8    The Book of Common Prayer  (The secret to understanding the Liturgy)

The Church as a body and an institution (How we're organized)

At each class there will be time to ask any questions you may have and for the discussion to in directions that you are interested in.

Sunday March 5 is the First Sunday of Lent.  We will have our official Episcopal Visitation with Bishop Diane Bruce.  People who would like to may have:

The Rite of  Confirmation:    If you were baptized as an infant, this is a chance to claim those promises for yourself.  The bishop lays hands on you and asks for an increase of the gifts of the Holy Spirit that you received at baptism.

The Rite of Reception:  If you were confirmed or some sort of adult recognition in another Christian body, you can be received into the Episcopal Church.  The bishop offers you a welcome.

The Rite of Renewal:  If you are baptized and confirmed, and simply want to renew these promises, the bishop has a special prayer for you.

So, you can choose which of these is right for you, or not as you wish.

We've always had fun with this class and you are sure enjoy it.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get a hold of Fr. Bob

2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.   Open House at the Rectory

We will celebrate Epiphany two days late.  While we really like celebrating the 12 days of Christmas, we also like having as many of us gather as possible so this year it will be 14 days!   We’ll do the Annual Epiphany Open House at the Rectory that Sunday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Bring some treats to share and enjoy each other as we close out Christmas.  We especially hope that those of you who are new among us, will come and that we can all know each other better.  Everyone of all ages is invited.

Church of the Angels Annual Giving for 2017

Here is a “gentle reminder” that we really need  everyone to make an Annual Giving Pledge for 2017.   A parish of our size must have the support of all its members in order to do all the things that make the parish so wonderful.

So, if you haven’t yet made a pledge for 2017, you can pick up a pledge card at the back of the Church, or online as   This year we have added something to make the process of Pledging even more gentle.  In addition to our regular mailing with a pledge card and return envelope, we have made it possible to submit your pledge on line.  We have a link to our website which you can go to, fill out, and submit your pledge.

To access on line pledging go to : http://www.coa-pasadena.org/pledge

When you press the “Submit” button your pledge card will automatically go to an email address specifically for the Parish Treasurer.

We do the Annual Giving Drive in a very low-key way and through the years, parishioners have generously supported the parish with their tithes and offerings.  Year by year when Bill talks to us, he simply states the facts, and invites all to join in and take part.

If you have already submitted your Annual Giving Pledge for 2017, we thank you.  If you haven’t yet, please make use of the on line pledge link.  The mail in cards are fine too.  If you’ve never make an Annual Giving Pledge before, we urge you to consider doing so.  In a parish our size, everyone’s contribution is vital.
