Church of the Angels

Annual Parish Retreat for 2016

 Looking For “Day Trippers”

Saturday October 16, 2016

The Annual Parish Retreat is probably the best way to get to know people in the parish.  We have a chance to spend quality time together over meals and activities and this is gives an opportunity for a deeper connection than we can get at coffee hour.   The hope is that as people bond, their church experience is enhanced.

One unique thing about the Annual Parish retreat is that you don’t have to go away for the whole weekend.  Because  The camp is only an hour and 15 minutes from COA and a very nice and easy drive it is possible to enjoy the site, the presentation, and the people on one day, Saturday.

 What happens on Saturday

 Breakfast  at 8:00 a.m.

Then a presentation for adults lasting from 9-11:30 or so.  This year one of our parishioners, Kelly Brandt, will be talking about dealing with losses of all kinds.  Kelly recently received her Certified Bereavement Facilitator, (CBF) certificate through Glendale Adventist Medical Center, and she will be leading a program called Reignite, a two day grief support workshop in January 2017 for women who are childless by circumstance, not by choice.

 After that, there is lunch.

In the afternoon there are a variety of things to do.  People go into town.  They  walk as a group around Lake Gregory.  Last year some us went up to the fire look out tower.  Later in the day we put out snacks before dinner.  People play games, work on puzzles, read, or just talk and visit.

After dinner we do a campfire and roast marshmallows and make smores.

It makes for a very nice day, and again you get to know people, make connections, develop friendships.

For people just coming on Saturday we charge $50.00 which covers the cost of 3 meals and the use of the facility.

Dip your toe in the water!

 So,  give this some consideration.

Then push past the inertia and dip your toe in the water.

We've done this activity for decades and we've always had a good experience.

Church of the Angels New Film Website goes live

Church of the Angels has been used as a movie location for the past 70 years.  The longest sequence is in the 1943 classic film, Since You Went Away.   Since then there many films, TV shows, and commercials have used the church as a location mostly for weddings and funerals, but other things as well, like a baptism for the TV show The Office, and President Jed Bartlett voting in his home town in West Wing.

When we have a film shoot and it’s on the calendar we write underneath it, Capital Giving.   That means that the income from movie locations is put back into the church’s infrastructure.  Normally a parish has to do a capital campaign every ten years in order to maintain its facility because Annual Giving is never enough to cover that cost.  Thanks to the movies, Church of the Angels has not had to do a capital campaign since the Centennial in 1989, and our infrastructure is in good shape.

COA has been chosen for locations because location scouts, people who look for sites for directors and producers search out appropriate settings, photograph them, and then present them to the movie makers.  COA has been well known in the location scout community and so most of our filming has come by word of mouth.  However as with so much these days, things are moving from the real world to the digital world, or as one geek puts it, from “Meatspace,” to Cyberspace.   People are looking on the web to find places to film.

So COA has produced a film website to make ourselves known to a new generation of film makers.   Our film liaisons Tim Down and Kenny Ryan have worked on presentation in terms of photos and text in order to make us both accessible and attractive.  The result is fantastic.  We’ve been working on this project all summer, and the result is fantastic.

We owe great debt of gratitude to Tim and Kenny for making it possible for us to have resource for a source of income, that few other churches enjoy.

Das Boot:   Working on the Boat that is Church of the Angels

Last Sunday was the date closest to the anniversary of when the construction of Church of the Angels was completed in 1889.  In the wonderful display case in the Parish Hall living room created by parishioner Jerry Campbell, you can see photos of the construction.  But of course it is never done.   We always have to work on something.  Here are some thing that have been done.

 1.  Sprinkler system.  You can see large areas of the lawn that have dried up due to water restrictions, but not just that, but the sprinklers we have don’t hit those spots.  We had the sprinkler system evaluated and several repairs and modifications were done.  Some new heads were added that both provide better coverage while using less water.   We hope to bring the lawn into better shape without using more water.

 2.  New LED  lights.  COA qualified for a program offered by Pasadena Water and Power to change out many of the lights in the Church and Parish Hall from CFLs and incandesants to lower wattage but just as bright, and many limes longer lasting LEDs.  These were provided and installed free of charge.   There are a few more to do, and the city will be in touch with us when those bulbs come in.

 3.  Winter Tasks.  We have a list of tasks that prepare the Church and Parish Hall for winter and (we hope) rain.  We clear the gutters and drains, we check the roofs for leaks, repair the upper windows in the parish hall, among other others.  October is the month we do this and we’ll be getting started shortly.

The Financial Page

Statements of your giving to Church of the Angels to the end of the Third Quarter will be mailed out this week.  We appreciate everyone’s support of the parish.  If there is a mistake on your statement, just let us know and we’ll correct it.   Please catch up on your Annual Giving Pledge if necessary.

Annual Giving will begin shortly.  We will be mailing out the Annual Giving Letter and Pledge Card.  We are also working to make it possible for parishioners to fill out a pledge card online and return it to us electronically.   When that is up and running we’ll let you know.

Hillsides Construction Begins

At long last (from their perspective) and way too soon(from our perspective) Hillsides has begun the long construction project that will result in replacing the Keck Center, (the brown building facing the Parish Hall) with a new dining facility, kitchen, and activity center, along with an underground parking lot and a relocation of the swimming pool.   They will be at this for the next 24 months.

Our Land Use Committee has worked with Hillside to insure protection of and access to our Parish Hall during the construction.  They worked on conditions to insure a good interaction between Hillsides and the Church as we go forward into the future.  As a result members of the Land Use Committee voiced support for the Hillsides project at the Pasadena Planning Commission and City Council last summer.

Parishioner Victoria Wilson is acting as the Church Liaison to the Construction Representative to insure a smooth process for the Church and Hillsides.   We have every confidence that there will be minimal problems between us and things will work to the benefit of us both.

All Saints Day Remembrance

On Sunday we will have out the sign up sheets for people to write the names of loved ones they would like to have remembered in the Eucharistic Prayer on the Sunday of All Saints.   The Sunday of All Saints will be November 6.  Feel free to put names on the sheets.  There is one for each of our Sunday liturgies.

Emmaus Road:  Monday October 3, 7:00 p.m.

We continue reading Fr. James Martin’s book Between Heaven and Mirth.  Fr. Martin has been a favorite author for the Emmaus Road Group.  We’ve read his books, The Jesuit Guide to Everything,  Jesus, and My Life with the Saints.  The book is available from Amazon.  We will read the Introduction and Chapter 3

Food For Thought:

On the Food for Thought Table this Sunday, an article by  David Brooks of The New York Times.  This article continues the series of articles we’ve had out to give us some background as we move closer to the election on November 8.   This article is entitled, “Trump, Taxes, and Citizenship.  Brooks argues that we are more than just taxpayers, but rather citizens who have a concern for the good of our society as a whole.  While we’re motivated by self interest, we have other motivations as well for the common good.  And motivated by those concerns we participate in civic activities and make sacrifices for others.   As you read the article you can hear echoes of what Christians are concerned about.  It’s also a good reminder, though he doesn’t mention it, that for Adam Smith and The Wealth of Nations, self interest doesn’t stand alone but is exercised within a moral context shaped by Christianity.
