Evensong and Parish Dinner

Sunday, September 28, 4:30 p.m.

Thank you to everyone who sent in their RSVPs for the Parish Dinner.  We’ve had a very good response and we look forward to a very good time.   Thanks in advance to those who are working to make this a wonderful event:  Carolyn Styler, David Waller, Jim Gruettner, April Bond.

Jerry Campbell’s Display of Historical Materials

As an integral part of our final 125 Anniversary Celebration, Jerry Campbell has created an exhibit showing the earthquake retrofitting of the Church, early blue prints done in England, and a selection of historical photographs.  The exhibit will be in the Parish Hall and we can all look at it as we come from the Evensong to the Parish Dinner.  We are very grateful to Jerry for making this for us.  It will give us a good sense of where we’ve been as we move forward to where God calls us to go.

 Food For Thought:  Video Version

Sundays, 9:00 a.m.  Science & Religion DVD

Last week we saw how St. Augustine spoke about how there was only one truth because there was only one source of truth:  God.   St. Augustine said that God reveals himself in two ways, through the “book of Nature,” and through “the book of Scripture.”   If there was a contradiction between the two, there was a problem in the interpretation of one of the other or both.   He was at pains to stress that interpreting both books is very difficult, with Scripture being the most difficult.

This week we will reflect on the question of just how does God work in the world of nature.  The answer will probably surprise you.

 Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Sundays, 10:00 a.m.

Introducing Work on the Eucharist

Jesus calls us to his table at the Eucharist to celebrate his death and resurrection.  He is the Light of the world.

In the CGS Level I atrium, the first of our great works about the Eucharist begins at the altar.    The purpose of introducing this material is to help prepare the child for fuller participation in the Liturgy.

We have a model altar, representing the one seen in the main church.  It has an altar table, our fair linen, and a beautiful cup that holds the wine and water called the “chalice,” a beautiful plate that holds the bread called the “paten,” a cross, and two candles in candleholders that remind us of the risen Christ.  We even have a photograph of our sanctuary’s awesome stained-glass window!

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will look at the books used in the Liturgy and the lectern where the lectionary rests, the cruets for wine and water, the lavabo and hand towel, additional altar linens - purificator and corporal, and the tabernacle that holds the ciborium.  Shortly thereafter, the child is introduced how the chalice is readied for the Eucharist: using decanters of water and wine to prepare the two cruets, then using the cruets to prepare the chalice with wine and just a few drops of water.

Although the meaning of this work might be considered a little light compared to the infancy narratives, kingdom parables, and the events leading to the Passion which will be given at a later time, it is no less important.   It is work that has been developed to respond to the sensorial needs of the child.   The focus remains on the Eucharist, providing vocabulary, and offering the children the opportunity of developing a work that is richer in content later on.  Church is no longer a place where everything is unknown, now they see objects that are familiar.

I hope you enjoy the moment of this photo.

COA Catechists to Attend International Meeting of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Catechists Georgie McAdams, Emily Woolery, Amy Riker, and Tracy Gaestel will travel to Phoenix Arizona on Wednesday October 1 to attend an international retreat for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.  They will join 600 catechists from 22 countries in a time of worship, learning, and fellowship.  The theme of the retreat is THE NEW CHILD AND THE NEW ADULT.

Seventeen years ago in 1997, Fr. Bob attended the first international Catechists retreat which was held in Assisi, Italy.  He got to spend a lot of time with Sofia Cavalletti, the originator of the Catechesis as well as the then new Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Frank Griswold.  Several catechists from the diocese of Los Angeles participated, and after the time in Assisi, Fr. Bob and the other catechists went to Rome to see the original atriums and meet the other founders.

In this retreat our catechists will be hearing a keynote address by Rebekah Rojcewicz who studied with Sofia Cavalletti and translated much of her work into English.  Other presentations will include, “CGS Origins and the Rome Atrium, The Theology of Childhood, and the purpose of the International body for CGS known as the Consiglio.  There will also be break out sessions, communal prayer sessions and worship, as well as plenary meetings.  There will also be a model atrium on display and the our catechists can attend a national meeting of the American Association of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

The original retreat in 1997 was spring board for COA to be leader both nationally and internationally in the Catechesis movement following on our giving the Pentecost Presentation to Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey along with our parish children and visitors from around the Diocese of Los Angeles on the Eve of Pentecost in 1996.

This will be a wonderful opportunity for our own catechists to make connections with other catechists from all over the world and to get a sense that what happens in our atriums at COA Sunday by Sunday, is part of something much larger whose impact is beyond our knowing.  Our catechists will know that the work they do is of vital importance.

We owe a great deal of gratitude to our parishioner Dot Hammond, who made a gift to fund our catechists attending this international meeting.  Thanks so much Dot!

Annual Parish Retreat:  October 17-19 Camp Thousand Pines, Crestline.

What are God's hopes for my life?  What would God enjoy seeing me become?  What kind of fulfillment would God like to see me experience?  How can I come to know this?

These questions can be summed up under the heading of "vocation."  Vocation literally means "call."  While we might first hear this word in terms of God's will, God's command, God's direction, what if instead it was really about invitation?  Instead of "I command you to do this, this is my will for you," it was, "I'd like to invite you to consider this path, see if you feel drawn to it, and if so, begin to walk on it"?

Who am I in the sight of God, and what does God hope for me and the life he has bestowed?

This will be the topic for this year's Annual Parish Retreat.  Fr. Bob will make use of various parts of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola as guides for how we might reflect on these questions for ourselves and how we can begin to hear God's invitation and respond to it.  The goal is for each of us to acquire a frame of reference from which we think about, understand, pray over, and then decide how to go about finding and fulfilling the end for which we are created

This will be our fourth year at this site.  We’ve had wonderful times here.  Participation can happen in several ways.   One can stay the weekend at Camp Thousand Pines.  This is especially good for families with children.  There is lodging in nearby Crestline as well, and people can come on the site for the program and activities.  Third, the Crestline is only an hour and a half away and people can easily drive up for the day on Saturday.  The Retreat is especially good for new people to get to know parishioners better.

Allen Woolery has some pictures that people can see to get a sense of things.  Check the link below.
