Saying Goodbye to Deacon Chitra
The Rev. Chitra Rao who did her Ministry Study Year with you last year and was ordained deacon in June, will be with us Sunday to serve in the Liturgy and to preach. This will be Chitra’s last Sunday with us as she will return to her home parish of Church of Our Savior in San Gabriel where her husband Roger sings in the choir. We’ve enjoyed having Chitra with us, and we wish her well as she continues to grow in the ordained ministry.
Food For Thought: Video Version
Sundays, 9:00 a.m. Science & Religion DVD
Last week we saw that the so called “warfare between science and religion” was a product of the late 19th Century America the result of two influential books whose way of doing history was shot through with errors.
This week we will hear about St. Augustine who talked about the book of Scripture and the book of Nature. St. Augustine emphasized that the process of interpreting Scripture is demanding and difficult and that as we learn more about the “book of nature,” that is a fuller understanding of the world and the universe, some previous interpretations of Scripture will have to be modified to incorporate this knowledge into its understanding of the truth. It is quite a nuanced view.
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Sundays, 10:00 a.m.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” Ps 46:10
Not only do we taste and see the goodness of the Lord, we hear it. For the children of the CGS Level I atrium, music is another way in which we listen to God. For the next few weeks, there are three songs which you child might be bringing into your home. The first one is called “Be Still and Know that I Am God.” We sing this song as we enter the atrium. It helps us to remind us we need to keep our bodies quiet in order to hear the Word of God. A link to how it sounds is found on:

We continue to work on our stillness with flower arranging, pouring activities, transferring objects from one bowl to another (which requires concentration so as not to drop an item outside the bowl) and polishing.
As we see the leaves, especially of the liquid amber trees, begin to change colors it is an appropriate time to introduce the seasons of the Church and her colors: white for feast days of great light; purple for preparation days ahead of the feast; green for growing time for thinking about what we know about the feast celebration; and red, a special color designated for the celebration of great love. We will begin to learn the second song called “Liturgical Color Song” which can be found on:

And, we end the atrium time with our recessional, “Go Now in Peace,” our third song. We sing this to everyone in the atrium. It is the seed planting of what we will come to know as the Exchange of Peace gesture later in the year. It also reminds us the Love of God surrounds us everywhere we go. Personally, this is one of my favorite CGS songs. The link to this one can be found on:

May the balance of your week be filled with joy!

Evensong and Parish Dinner
Sunday, September 28, 4:30 p.m.
An email blast went out this week reminding everyone to please send their RSVP’s in so we get an accurate count for the caterer. In addition to the Evensong and dinner, there is one other aspect to the celebration that hasn’t been in the announcements, but is very important.
Jerry Campbell’s Display of Historical Materials
As an integral part of our final 125 Anniversary Celebration, Jerry Campbell has created an exhibit showing the earthquake retrofitting of the Church, early blue prints done in England, and a selection of historical photographs. The exhibit will be in the Parish Hall and we can all look at it as we come from the Evensong to the Parish Dinner. We are very grateful to Jerry for making this for us. It will give us a good sense of where we’ve been as we move forward to where God calls us to go.
Details:
Please send in your Card and Checks so we can keep everything straight.
If You Are New to the Parish: There are blank invitations in the box. Please pick one up and join us.
In Conclusion We are looking forward to a wonderful event. If the wine tasting event is any indication, we can see that we are in for a very good time. So please pick up your invitations and mail back the RSVP
Coffee Hour Sign Up
The Sign up Sheet for Coffee Hour for September and October will be on coffee table this Sunday.
Santa Maria Barbecue : Saturday, October 11 on the Parish Hall Lawn.
Coming up Saturday, October 11 is our annual Santa Maria BBQ, for over a decade now one of our most popular and best-attended parish events. On the Parish Hall lawn we grill tri-tip and chicken over red-oak fires using a time-honored Santa Maria recipe, and add a simple salad, barbecue beans and grilled-and-buttered French bread. You bring drinks and desserts and your family and friends and it all adds up to an all-you-can-eat feast of great food and great fellowship. On the sign-up sheet Sunday morning, let us know how many are coming, what you're bringing and if/how you can help.
And don't overlook the helping part. None of this happens without the many helping hands each year who do everything from purchasing to grilling, setup to cleanup. No experience necessary! If you'd like to be part of this year's happy crew, say so on the sign-up sheet, or contact coordinator Chris Askew directly at 626 200-5209 / christopher.askew@gmail.com.

Annual Parish Retreat: October 17-19 Camp Thousand Pines, Crestline.
What are God's hopes for my life? What would God enjoy seeing me become? What kind of fulfillment would God like to see me experience? How can I come to know this?
These questions can be summed up under the heading of "vocation." Vocation literally means "call." While we might first hear this word in terms of God's will, God's command, God's direction, what if instead it was really about invitation? Instead of "I command you to do this, this is my will for you," it was, "I'd like to invite you to consider this path, see if you feel drawn to it, and if so, begin to walk on it"?
Who am I in the sight of God, and what does God hope for me and the life he has bestowed?
This will be the topic for this year's Annual Parish Retreat. Fr. Bob will make use of various parts of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola as guides for how we might reflect on these questions for ourselves and how we can begin to hear God's invitation and respond to it. The goal is for each of us to acquire a frame of reference from which we think about, understand, pray over, and then decide how to go about finding and fulfilling the end for which we are created
This will be our fourth year at this site. We’ve had wonderful times here. Participation can happen in several ways. One can stay the weekend at Camp Thousand Pines. This is especially good for families with children. There is lodging in nearby Crestline as well, and people can come on the site for the program and activities. Third, the Crestline is only an hour and a half away and people can easily drive up for the day on Saturday. The Retreat is especially good for new people to get to know parishioners better.
Allen Woolery has some pictures that people can see to get a sense of things. Check the link below.
